TPHS @ CIF Division 1 Playoffs February 20, 2010
The Torrey Pines High School varsity team collectively worked their way to 6th place on Saturday, February 20th at the CIF San Diego Section Division I Playoffs held at San Pasqual High School in Escondido.
Eighteen local squads competed for the top eight berths in each weight class to gain entry into the next echelon of high school wrestling, the section's CIF Masters Wrestling Tournament taking place Friday and Saturday, February 26th and 27th in El Centro, CA, where they will contend with athletes from Divisions II, III and IV schools.
"I was very proud of our effort on Saturday (at Divisionals)," remarked TP Head Coach Jesse Mindlin. "Everyone of our eight qualifiers wrestled to or at their seed (ranking). This is decent measure of our performance."
Senior Alex Pisacane (147 lbs.) was seeded first at the start of the annual tournament and claimed the championship for his weight class by pinning competitors from Otay Ranch and Vista before facing off against Poway in a decisive match. The wrestler, who was named a North County Times Athlete of the Week for his victory, credits the disciplined TP team practices, particularly the grueling 6:30 a.m. morning runs and sprints (he logged a 5.24-minute mile during one last week) and the crew's annual climb up nearby "Puke Hill" while carrying a teammate on their backs, for his focused conditioning.
"It's still really hard," admits Pisacane, "but I guess I just use the mental toughness I've built up the last few years to get through it. It never hurts to have the conditioning and that helps in those tough matches."
Sharing second place finishes were senior Spence Sarazin (162 lbs.) and junior Harry Wilburn (287 lbs.). Sarazin pinned opponents from San Pasqual and Calexico and logged a 10-5 win from Vista before his final match with Poway's Ian Roy. Wilburn also worked strongly through the ranks gaining falls from Eastlake and Poway rivals before his heartbreakingly narrow 1-3 loss to Rancho Buena Vista's Robin Case.
Tony Palladino, a 142-pound senior, was the team's sole third placer beating out challengers from El Camino and Rancho Bernardo before his phenomenal 11-9 overtime match with Rancho Buena Vista's Brock Smith. Palladino finished the tournament with a 5-match-rule forfeit by Vista.
Senior Dillon Joyce (154 lbs.) earned fifth for the day working successfully through El Camino (fall) and Carlsbad (3-0) before his final forfeit from Southwest. Three teammates took seventh: sophomores Hyland Stangl (127 lbs.) and Colin Durkin (174 lbs.) and junior Ryan Thomson (217 lbs.). Stangl snatched a last round pin against Mira Mesa while Durkin and Thomson got forfeits from Escondido and Fallbrook, respectively, for their placements.
Freshman Kyle Gross (132 lbs.) worked the mat for three rounds and senior Ankur Chauhan (137 lbs.) stayed for two. Senior teammates Ruby Lopez and Don Casey, both out on injuries, documented the squad's results.
Coach Mindlin, joined by assistants Jonathan Mendis, Tom Bauer, and Dave McAllister, concluded, "If we continue to perform at the same level this weekend (at Masters), we are in a position to accomplish our team goals for the season. Individually, we need to make a few small adjustments and remain determined to finish the season at our peak."

San Marcos @ TPHS December 11, 2008
The dual meet with San Marcos was as exciting as it gets. The meet came down to the last match with a tie score and the heavyweights on the mat. Harry Willburn came through with a first period pin to secure the win for the Falcons. We had not had the lead since the first individual match at 103 when Jarred Moore pinned his opponent. From there the dual meet twisted and turned throughout. Picking up important pins for the Falcons were Jarred Moore, Spence Sarazin, Keegan McAllister, Harry Willburn and Robert Murray in his first match as a Falcon wrestler. Getting big wins were Mark Holmes, Dillon Joyce and Tony Palladino. The final score was 39-33 to make our record 1-1 on the year as we get closer to league matches in January.
TPHS @ Ramona December 4, 2008
Ramona has a traditionally tough program.A total of 26 matches were wrestled with the Falcons winning 19!!At the frosh/JV level we won 13 out of 15 matches. This is an incredibly encouraging start to the season for our young wrestlers. The varsity dual meet included 11 matches (we forfeited 3 weight classes for a total of 18 team points) of which we won 6.The final score was a loss by a score of 48-30.Winning by pin were Mark Holmes, Alex Pisacane and Spence Sarazin.Dillon Joyce, Martin Wang, and Keegan McAllister all came through with important and exciting wins.We wrestled like a team in our first match of the year with some sloppy performances at times while looking very good at other times. Our enthusiasm and support for each other was awesome. We definitely need to stop the trend of losing by pin.All 5 losses were by pin, which is devastating in our team competitions.Overall, the night was a positive experience with each of our team members taking away a lesson learned and an opportunity for growth.

State & Overall Tournament Results
Over the weekend our wrestling team participated in the California State Wrestling Championships. Representing our team was Daniel Kwittken as he qualified by finishing 2nd in the San Diego Section. Daniel wrestled amazingly and placed 4th in the State in the 140 lb weight class. This is an incredible accomplishment. Daniel was also recognized by the state CIF committee with an award for superior sportsmanship (his second such award this year). We are proud of Daniel for his hard work on the mat and his growth as a person.
Some background on wrestling to put this in perspective. There are approximately 900 high schools in California with wrestling programs. All of the 900 schools send representatives to qualifying tournaments that lead to the state meet. The state tournament includes the top 40 wrestlers at each weight class after the qualifying tournaments have eliminated the rest of the competitors. There are no divisions based on school size; California is one of two states that have only one division for wrestling and by far the largest.
We are proud of the consistent improvement with regard to accomplishments on the mat. We are committed to continuing this along with being involved in the development of our wrestlers' character and academic achievements.

Masters
Masters started with two of our five automatic qualifiers out of the competition. The "plague of '08" continued its toll on the TPHS team. Both Alex Pisacane and Ryan Hagen were unable to compete at Masters due to illness. Fortunately, senior Robbie Parrish (152) made it into the tournament as an alternate and surprised many in the tournament to qualify for the second day of competition. We are very proud of Robbie's strong finish. Spence Sarazin (145) conitnued his impressive development by also qualifying for the second day of competition putting both he and Robbie in the top 16 in the county. Shawn Murphy (189) saw his season come to an end on the first day despite a season filled with growth on the mat and off. Shawn's contributions to the program will be felt for a long time. Daniel Kwittken continued his strong season with a birth in the finals of Masters. He is the only TPHS wrestler to make the Masters finals twice. By making the finals he qualified for the state meet in Bakersfield on February 29-March 1. Daniel is one of the most talented wrestlers in the state and looks to continue his solid wrestling in Bakersfield.

The competition was tough but the Falcons responded well. We placed 8 out of the 10 wrestlers we brought to the Division I CIF Championships. Five of those automatically qualify for the Masters Tournament this Friday and Saturday at Mission Hills HS. Daniel Kwittken won the tournament (only the second in TPHS history) at 140 pounds. Placing 3rd was Spence Sarazin (145), Shawn Murphy was 6th (189), Ryan Hagen was 7th (171) and Alex Pisacane was 8th (130). Finishing 9th were: Keegan McAllister (160), Jarred Moore (103) and Robbie Parrish (152). The 9th place finishers are alternates for the Masters meet. The Falcons finished 9th overall as a team and remain focused on finishing strong at the Masters Tournament.
Two Seniors Accepted to Outstanding Universities
Congratulations to Ryan Silvers and Jake Hayutin!! Both have been accepted to incredible universitities. Ryan has been admitted to Purdue University and Jake to Rider University. These guys have represented our wrestling program so well and will continue to do so next year. Both are awaiting more acceptance letters and will make a decision on what college they will attend soon. It is amazing what wrestling can do to help these young achieve greatness on the mat and off. Way to go!
Dual Meet at TPHS vs. Mt. Carmel - Thursday, Jan. 24th, 2008
Another exciting dual meet for the Falcons. We won 5 of the 11 matches against a very strong Mt. Carmel program with 3 pins, a tech and an overtime win.The wrestlers recording a pin were:Daniel Kwittken, Keegan McAllister and Shawn Murphy.Spence Sarazin beat his opponent 19-2 for a tech fall and Alex Pisacane won the most exciting match of the night with a 9-7 overtime takedown. The final score, which was a 50-29 loss, was not indicative of the level of competition between the two schools. This was an encouraging overall performance.

Dual Meet at Home - Thurs. Jan. 17th - Versus Rancho Bernardo
From Coach Mindlin: That was an exciting dual both in the level of competition and in the amount of support for our wrestlers. The announcing, spotlights, cheerleaders, music, etc. were all great additions to the event. We also had a successful night with respect to concessions and the sale of wrestling gear. Thank you to all involved. We will work on improving on the mat so that the most important aspect, the competition, will be better next time out. From Rob Parrish - The "Announcer": Thanks to everyone for the great support for the Dual Meet yesterday with Rancho Bernardo, it was terrific. One of the parent/supporters of Rancho Bernardo complimented the announcing saying she appreciated the unbiased flavor.
And this note was received from the Rancho Bernardo coach, Joe Eddie Terribilini: IT was awesome! That is how Duals should be! I enjoyed the opening ceremonies as well! Great for the sport! Everyone was great in participating and doing their part including Deborah in absentia.Melissa was wonderful in everything including the last minute program printing. The snack bar crew was fantastic as well as profitable. Be sure to thank the coaches for the great preparation and talent they provided to get our children to this level of competition. Each meet seems to bring someone to a new level of awareness and ability. It was great to be able to participate and contribute back to the sport.
Jim Londos Memorial - Jan. 4th & 5th, 2008
The Falcons continued some very solid wrestling at Orange Glen over the weekend. Six out of the seven wrestlers placed with Daniel Kwittken once again leading the charge. The team placed 10th out of 32 teams with only 7 of the 14 weight classes filled. Daniel took home his second tournament championship while Keegan McAllister continued his rapid growth with a 4th place finish. Shawn Murphy also wrestled well (5th @ 189) as did Spence Sarazin (6th @ 145). Alex Pisacane (7th @ 130) and Jake Hayutin (7th @ 135) contributed valuable team points. However, the most important event from the tournament came after wrestling had completed. Daniel received the Willie James Jones Sportsmanship Award for his personal growth off the mat as recognized by the coaches in attendance. The coaching staff is most proud of recognition for our wrestlers' behavior off the mat as it is these life skills that will carry on after wrestling is over. Daniel is one of many fine young men on the team. Great job Daniel!
Dual Meet at El Camino - Thurs. Jan. 3rd, 2008
This dual meet was full of highs for the team.A consistent effort, great execution and superior training led to a convinving win over El Camino.Particularly impressive efforts came from Jarred Moore (103 lbs), Andrew Eckberg (119), Alex Pisacane (135), Daniel Kwittken (145), Spence Sarazin (152) and Keegan McAllister (171).However, this was a total team effort and it is hard to narrow this match to just a few guys that made it possible. This win puts TPHS at 2-0 heading into a difficult league schedule but should bring some confidence to the entire program.
The trip to Vegas was a great experience for all of the wrestlers and coaches. The parent support was incredible for a competition so far away from home and made the wrestlers' efforts worthwhile. Daniel Kwittken was the lone placer (4th place at 140 lbs. with a 6-2 record) but the team took a lot of good experience from the trip. Jake Hayutin had to withdraw due to illness or else looked on pace to bring home a medal. Spence Sarazin (145 lbs) and Shawn Murphy (189 lbs) both qualified for the second day of wrestling with solid performances. The most notable aspect of the trip was the maturity of the wrestlers throughout the weekend. All 10 of the guys represented themselves, their families and this program with class.
